The Carihuairazo volcano, located within the Chimborazo Wildlife Production Reserve, is part of Ecuador’s National System of Protected Areas. This high-altitude sanctuary is home to native llamas, alpacas, and vicuñas, which you’ll see roaming freely as you hike toward the summit — just 10 km away from the famous Chimborazo volcano, the closest point to the sun.

Unlike more technical climbs, the Carihuairazo trek is beginner-friendly, making it the perfect introduction to high-altitude mountaineering in the Andes. On this tour, we’ll reach the Pico Máximo (5,020 meters), offering breathtaking views and an unforgettable adventure.

While technical experience is not required, good physical condition and proper acclimatization are essential for a safe and enjoyable experience. Our certified mountain guides will support you every step of the way as you explore this remote and wild landscape.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrival at Carihuairazo Base Camp

1. 10:00 AM: Departure from Geotours office in Baños.
2. Scenic 3-hour drive to the Carihuairazo climbing zone, within the Chimborazo Wildlife Reserve.
3. Hike to the glacier base, where we set up base camp.
4. Enjoy a freshly prepared lunch on arrival.
5. Technical instruction session: learn how to use crampons, rope, ice axe, and safety systems.
6. Dinner and overnight at camp under the stars, surrounded by high-altitude silence.

Day 2 – Summit Day & Return to Baños

1. 06:00 AM: Light breakfast and gear preparation.
2. Start the 4-hour glacier climb to the summit of Carihuairazo (5,018 m).
3. Take in sweeping views of Chimborazo, El Altar, and the central Ecuadorian Andes.
4. Descend back to base camp for a well-earned lunch.
5. Return drive to Baños, with estimated arrival at 17:00.
