Puyopungo – 2 Day Amazon Tour Description

Puyopungo is known in Ecuador for being a place of easy acces to the Amazon, since it is located only 30 minutes away from Puyo. Geotours has prepared a 2 days tour to Puyopungo where you can learn from the ancestral knowledge of indigenous communities, taste the typical food, go hiking in the jungle, sail the rivers and disconnect from daily stress.

Puyopungo – 2 Day Amazon Tour Itinerary

  1. Depart the Geotours office in our comfortable van for the 90 minute ride from Baños to Puyo, through the scenic Route of the Waterfalls of Sangay National Park.
  2. Along the way, our naturalist guide, a professional with extensive knowledge of the flora, fauna and culture of the area, will point out interesting information to prepare you for this exciting day!
  3. Our first stop will be at an animal refuge center where you will see and learn about animal species like monkeys, felines, and birds representative of the Ecuadorian Amazon.
  4. Our next visit will be to the Quichua community Coto Cocha, where we will see and learn about these indigenous people and observe their hand made ceramics and other crafts.
  5. A beautiful ride on the Puyo river will follow, in a wooden canoe used regularly by the Quichua community.
  6. A traditional Ecuadorian lunch will be prepared for us at Hola Vida. We will be served a classic dish known as Maito de Pescado, which is fish that has been cooked in the bijao leaves found the forest.
  7. This is a very healthy and tasty dish! Chicken or vegetarian options are available upon request.
  8. Our afternoon will be spent hiking through the forest while our guide explains about the unique Ecuadorian rainforest, identifying several plants with different uses and properties.
  9. Imagine a plant that can give you a temporary Jungle Tattoo! The hike will lead us to a beautiful hidden waterfall, inviting us to bathe in its crystal waters.
  10. To end the day, we will watch the sun set from above the jungle canopy. This is an ideal time to take photos or just relax and enjoy the incredible view. 
  11. We then get settled into our accommodations for the night, eat dinner prepared on-site by our guide and appreciate the sky overhead, full of stars.
  12. Day two begins with breakfast at 8:30. Afterwards we will set off to explore the deepest area of the jungle reserve.
  13. Over the 4-5 hour walk you will gain much knowledge from our guides, individuals with extensive years experience and coexistence with the jungle and its community.
  14. Big trees, beautiful flowers, colorful birds and unique insects will surround you throughout this enriching jungle tour.
  15. After lunch we will visit a cocoa plantation owned by an indigenous family, here you can live the experience of harvesting, drying and grinding your own chocolate to later drink it as a hot chocolate.
  16. Like this you will end your amazon experience with Geotours!
