Straddling the provinces of Pichincha and Cotopaxi, the Ilinizas are twin volcanic peaks located in the heart of Ecuador’s Avenue of the Volcanoes. These iconic mountains offer climbing experiences for all skill levels — from first-time trekkers to seasoned alpinists.

The North Iliniza (5,126 m / 16,818 ft) is the more accessible of the two, perfect for those seeking a non-technical high-altitude adventure with spectacular views. The South Iliniza (5,305 m / 17,405 ft), however, is a more technical climb, featuring steep ascents and icy sections that challenge even experienced climbers.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1 – Approach Hike & Mountain Training

• 10:00 AM: Pick-up at Geotours office in Baños, private transport to La Virgen trailhead (approx. 3,900 m).
• Begin the 3-hour hike through the Andean páramo to Refugio Nuevos Horizontes (4,750 m).
• Lunch at the refuge.

Afternoon: Skills & Acclimatization

• Climbing instruction session with your mountain guide:
• Rope handling, rock scrambling, basic high-altitude safety
• Free time to relax, dinner, and rest at the mountain hut.
• Team briefing for summit day.
